Ang Qing Sheng

 

Ang Qing Sheng is an artist-educator who teaches at the Puttnam School of Film & Animation, LASALLE College of the Arts, University of the Arts Singapore. He holds a Masters of Arts in Arts Pedagogy and Practice from Goldsmith-LASALLE and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Hons) in Digital Animation from Nanyang Technological University.

 

As an academic, he has presented at various international conferences, including the ELIA Biennial Conference in 2020 hosted virtually by Zurich University of the Arts, Society for Animation Studies (SAS) Conference in 2016 (Singapore) and 2017 (Italy), Animation Public Engagement Symposium (APES) in 2015 (U.K) and the Center for Culture and Cultural Studies (CCCS) Conference in 2015 (Macedonia). He moderated a panel titled "Southeast Asia, Animated" virtually in 2021, hosted by Singapore Film Society. He has also presented locally at LASALLE's Learning and Teaching Seminar 2017, Animation Nation 2016 at SCAPE and Singapore Writer's Festival 2015 at The Arts House. His academic publications include the peer-reviewed Animation Practice, Process & Production (AP3) Journal (Intellect) and the Animation Studies Journal (SAS).

 

As an educator, Qing Sheng has supervised and mentored award-winning LASALLE student films and meaningful collaboration projects. Some of these projects include ArtWalk Little India Augmented Reality (AR) in 2019 and Paris-Lyon-Singapour at Annecy MIFA Campus. He has also engaged younger students in animation when he partnered with The Filmic Eye to conduct workshops for Chung Cheng High School and Catholic High School (2015), as well as the senior generation at Our Animation Journey workshop sponsored by the National Arts Council (NAC) in 2016.

 

As a filmmaker, he has received support from LASALLE, NAC, Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) SCAPE and Viddsee to produce animated short films. "5 Shades of Solitude" was produced for Utter 2015 as part of the Singapore Writer's Festival; "Lak Boh Ki", the world's first Hainanese animated short, has won the Audience Choice Award and Judges Special Prize at the International Digital Animation Festival NAGOYA, Excellent Award at Asiagraph 2016 in Tokyo as well as the Singapore Gold Award at the 19th Digicon6 ASIA; "Kua Bo", a Hokkien-animated short film, won the Best Animation at the Singapore National Youth Film Awards 2020 and the Silver Award at the 22nd Digicon6 ASIA Singapore. "Traffic Light" is the winning animation pitch at the inaugural Film Facilitation Programme organised by SCAPE and has won the Singapore Gold award at the 23rd Digicon6 ASIA.

 

As an artist, he has published a colouring book titled "Picturesque Shophouses" with Epigram in 2016. He has also exhibited and published several artworks with the Urban Sketchers Singapore. His most recent moving illustration titled "Traffic Light" was featured at "Image and Sound In Spite Of" 2020 showcase, and mentioned on Lianhe Zaobao and A-list.

 

In the area of sustainability, he is the winner of the City Developments Limited (CDL) E-Generation Challenge 2019 which landed him on an Arctic Expedition with world-renowned explorer Robert Swan. He has produced and mentored a number of eco-films with CDL and Jane Goodall Institute (Singapore) to inspire sustainable human-nature coexistence.

 

Every now and then, he will squeeze in time to do urban sketching and hiking!
